It’s Fairtrade Fortnight at Midcounties Co-operative. Running from 25th February to 10th March 2019, Fairtrade Fortnight is a celebration of the importance of Fairtrade.
Fairtrade is a great way of being socially responsible – one of Co-operative Travel’s most important values – and helps ensure that workers in poorer countries are paid fair wages.
We are proud to work with ethical travel companies including Kuoni, G Adventures, and the Travel Foundation. We work hard in partnership with these organisations to consider the impact that tourism has on different destinations across the world, with the aim of making each holiday benefit the area and its local community.
Fairtrade and responsible tourism go hand-in-hand, so let’s look at some of the incredible – and ethical! – adventures you could start looking forward to Fairtrade Fortnight 2019.
G Adventures – South America and South Africa Tours
G Adventures partners with a number of different ethical groups and charities, with the aim of using tourism as a force for good in the world. These groups cover issues such as child and animal welfare, disaster relief, connecting visitors with indigenous people in a responsible manner, and sustainable travel.
Our partner G Adventures arranges spectacular responsible experiences such as South African safaris and trips across South America. You can visit some of the most stunningly beautiful and unique destinations in the world with Co-operative Travel and G Adventures, all the while knowing that your holiday is benefiting the areas you visit.
Midcounties Co-operative member Jennie Simpson recently returned from her own “Ethical Adventure of a Lifetime” in Guatemala – a spectacular prize she was awarded by Midcounties Co-operative. The holiday, which was awarded in association with G Adventures, taught Jennie the ways that Fairtrade benefits local workers and farmers, improving their the lives and helping to build essential local infrastructure.

Kuoni – West Africa, South Africa, South America, and Asia holidays
Kuoni are one of the leading ethical travel companies and have helped develop the world’s first-ever Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) certified package. When Fair Trade Tourism certifies a product, it stands for fair wages, better working conditions, respect for human rights, and a higher level of sustainability and fairness all round.
This Fair Trade Certified package to South Africa offers overnight stays at Fair Trade-certified lodges, and every aspect of the tour is audited against Fair Trade standards by an independent auditing company.
Kuoni and Co-operative Travel take responsible travel seriously, and offer ethical tours and experiences across the world, many of which include destinations that benefit from Fair Trade.
The Travel Foundation
Our partner The Travel Foundation collaborates with local communities, authorities, and holiday companies to help push tourism closer to being sustainable and responsible for everyone it affects. The Foundation provides training programmes to help entrepreneurs in countries such as Jamaica, Kenya, and Mombasa improve their business skills, and to enable them to build a sustainable future.
Fairness and sustainability are at the heart of everything that we and The Travel Foundation do. There is the option for £2 to be added to every booking which goes to the Travel Foundation, contributing to the millions of pounds the company has donated to charitable activities they support.
