In 2018, the world is looking for ways to promote more environmental awareness. Wealthy influencers, huge companies, and entire countries are putting billions of pounds into reusable energy, climate action, and recycling programmes.
Most people have realised the importance of living greener – and that goes double for when you are away on holiday, visiting another person’s home. With just a little effort, you can join a scheme aiming to have a positive lasting impact on local cultures and the wider environment.
Get involved with Make Holidays Greener!
Make Holidays Greener – the scheme
Make Holidays Greener is an annual campaign led by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) aiming to encourage the holiday industry, and you, the holidaymaker, to take more actions that benefit both the environment and the community. The theme for 2018 is, “Say no to plastic”, and the Make Holidays Greener team is making it easier than ever to do a little for the planet while you enjoy your trip away.
In 2017, the Make Holidays Greener team had an exciting year of social action and environmental success. Some of last year’s highlights included:
- Creating 15 new pledges, which helped holidaymakers to be more sustainable while on holiday
- Receiving over 840 pledges from holidaymakers
- An estimated 2,500 people or more taking part in organised beach cleans
- Reaching hundreds of thousands of people across social media, and spreading the message of sustainability worldwide
2018 is looking to be even more exciting and successful, by showing the damage that plastic does to the environment and by focusing on the ways that people can use less plastic both abroad and at home.
How to get involved
There are many ways to become a part of 2018’s Make Holidays Greener campaign.
You can pledge to skip using disposable plastic while you are away, and savour more sustainable materials.
You can pledge to ensure that you are only buying from companies and accommodations that are pushing for better environmental behaviour.
You can arrange a holiday clean-up, push for a reduction in energy usage, use nothing but local transport, or limit yourself to shorter showers while reusing towels and bed linen to reduce the amount of water you use while away.
You can even come up with your own pledge, if there is something you are particularly passionate about or interested to include in your holiday.
What’s in it for you?
Of course, the main aim of taking part in the scheme should be for the knowledge and satisfaction that you are making a positive environmental impact while you enjoy your holiday – but there’s more than that.
If you make a pledge to Make Holidays Greener this year, you’ll be rewarded with an entry into a prize draw and have the chance to win a GoPro camera. If one pledge isn’t enough for you, you’ll get a separate entry into the competition for every pledge you make.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page for other ways in which you can get involved and win even more prizes.
Make your holiday in 2018 more sustainable and environmentally beneficial than ever before!
